we pray to you, our God

The ancient Romans, our God,
celebrated the two-faced god, Janus,
at the turning of the year—
the god facing both forward and backward—
seeing both the past and the future.
But we pray to You, our God,
who were with us through what’s been,
are with us now,
and will be with us in and through the days to come—
with us through what has been, is, and will be so very very hard,
and through what has been, is, and will be so very very glorious—
not present with us to manipulate circumstances
into reward or punishment,
but to fulfill us in and through them all.
We celebrate this commitment
to relationship—to us—to love,
and we commit ourselves,
in this new year,
to deepening our awareness of Your presence
and to attuning ourselves ever more to Your presence—
in the way we live
and in the way we love.
Amen.
