the absolute uncertainty

Walking to work
in the sun,
after weeks of snow and ice and cold,
parts of the sidewalks
were already completely dry—
the snow all melted,
right next to rivulets of snowmelt,
and then, interspersed, those spots
where your feet would still just slide right out from underneath you.

And you walk
in the absolute uncertainty
of what the next step brings.

A more apt metaphor for life’s journey,
don’t you think,
than a path
either all dry,
all wet,
all snow,
or all ice?
