the seriousness of prayer

The grandmother of a 4-year-old
in our church preschool told me,
“Our household is not very religious.
Truth be told, I was raised that way—
religious, you know.
Pretty conservative, actually.
But we are now a family of different faith traditions—
and none.”

“But because of your preschool,
we now pray before all our meals together.
And when my granddaughter had friends over,
she invited them to pray before they had pizza.
One of her little friends couldn’t believe it.
‘Really?’ he asked incredulously. ‘For pizza?’
And do you know what my granddaughter said?
Do you know what she said?
She said, ‘We take God seriously in this house!'”

I join her in loving that.
