good news

It was bad news.
And after the shock,
the denial,
the fear,
the rage,
the hope,
that’s what it still was—
bad news.

Which poses somewhat of a conundrum
for those of us who proclaim good news—
Your good news, God.

What do we have to say when the news is bad?
What do we have to say that is honest—
that maintains integrity?

Yes, we can point out
that it’s always been into bad news
that Your good news comes—
that it’s not into good news that good news comes.

The light does not shine in the light.

And we can affirm both that good news isn’t easy news,
and that good news doesn’t necessarily make bad news go away.

Yes.
And so what?

Maybe—
maybe we can say that good news—
Your good news,
introduced to bad news,
makes of bad news hard news.
But I think, honestly, even with the perspective of hard,
it remains bad.

But shared.
And so not the same.

The light shines in the darkness.
Your good news.
