de.i.fy

Walking up through Manhattan on Sixth Avenue
through Chelsea toward the Theater District,
we passed a church
no longer a church—
a salon now—
well, a Laser and Beauty Lounge, actually.

How sad, I thought peering in
to what had been sanctuary
now fluorescently lit—
so very bright
with white on white decor.

And de.i.fy was the name
of this place
“where state of the art technology
meets a new standard in personal pampering”

Someone with a sense of humor
came up with this name—
someone with a prophetic word,
intended as such or not.

Still sad,
yet true,
in a church no longer a church—
or anywhere else, for that matter,

to set apart “I”
at the heart of what we name divine.
