we’re not like most

On a four week trip,
mindful of hauling luggage
and using public transport,
we packed light.

This necessitated packing laundry detergent
and washing clothes.

Easy at the in-laws home with their washing machine.
Less easy in sinks of hotels and Gasthofs,
hanging clothes out to dry.

Teaching my daughter
to wash and rinse and wring, I said,
“Most people in the world
wash their clothes this way.”

Pause.
“No one I know does.”

So important to remember,
regularly,
we are not most people.
