Wandering the cobblestone streets
of the Altstadt (the old city) of Heidelberg
with tourists and university students,
we ate at a tavern,
amidst the occasional,
loudly shouted fraternity toast from nearby tables—
at a tavern in business since 1703!
Mom and Dad studied German here back in 1965.
A good place, it seems to me,
to learn more than a language—
to be immersed
in a sense of history
and thus identity.
