Looking up at the scaffolding
surrounding the ornate steeple of the Freiburg Dom,
my wife remembered having read
that the sandstone, of which the church is made,
is an extremely soft stone.
So all decorative work
(and there’s a lot of decorative work!)
needs to be redone
every sixty years or so.
There are, in fact, elderly residents of the city
who have never seen the church without some scaffolding!
It occurs to me that a more accurate
and appropriate image of the church
than the merely magnificent and impressive,
is the magnificent and the impressive
that requires constant attention and care.
