leaving Amsterdam

Leaving Amsterdam,
it was clear
that the picture to take
was of the distinctive roof line
of a row of houses
all reflected in the canal.

So on a sunny day—
nothing to take for granted in Amsterdam,
and probably in early morning stillness.

We left on a sunny day—
in early morning stillness,
but it was too late.

I didn’t have time to find
the right row of houses.
They were not
right outside the Centraal train-station.

The art of photography
is, in part, knowing just how
to seize the fortune
of the scene of a moment,
but is, in far greater part,
about knowing a place—
and knowing it well—
not lucking into it.
