at the Amsterdam Van Gogh museum, ii.

Van Gogh painted several still lifes of shoes.
According to legend,
he would buy a pair at a local flea market,
wear them around
through the mud
until they were filthy enough
to be interesting enough
to paint.

It’s not that he was just practicing.

Rainer Maria Rilke wrote
in The Book of Hours,
“Nothing is too small for me,
and I love it anyway.”
