Welkom Thuis

Coming into Amsterdam
on the Thalys high speed train from Paris,
we got off at the Schiphol Airport exit
because of construction down around the Centraal main station.
As we looked around our platform,
trying to get our bearings,
we saw the girls’ Uncle John and Aunt Cindy
walking down the platform toward us,
waving their arms, grinning real big—
with heart-shaped balloons reading “Welkom Thuis”—
“Welcome home.”

And the girls knew they were—
in a city in which they had never been.
