After checking our bags
at the Dulles airline check-in counter,
we went through security
and then down the escalator
to the trains to the concourses.
When we arrived at our concourse
and got off the train, she asked,
“So now when do we pick up our bags?”
We looked at her sideways.
“In London,” we said.
“In London?!” she exclaimed.
“Yes, in London.” Amused.
“But I didn’t tell it goodbye!”
And I wondered how much
we who know what to expect
miss of what will always remain the unexpected.
