tempted in the wilderness

Baptized, named, claimed, blessed,
anointed by God,
full of the Spirit,
led in the wilderness—
in and through the wilderness of our world—
the wilderness of our culture—
consistently facing temptation—

less the temptation to reject God
as to accept the world’s diagnoses of what it most needs
in the name of God,
less the temptation to elevate the self
in selfish, egotistical narcissism
as to endorse the world’s hopes,
less the temptation to do evil
as the temptation to do good, but not love—

consistently facing temptation,
but persistently claiming the story of God,
and the presence of God,
and thus the story of God, love still unfolding—
tested and true—

in me?
