unintended

Eating out, we saw that sign
I’m sure you’ve seen before:
“Unattended children
will be given an espresso
and a free puppy.”

Enthusiastically, my nine-year-old
hopped up to head forthwith to the hostess,
and as she left our table,
I heard her saying,
“I am so unattended!”

What was meant as threat (for parents)
was heard as promise (by a child),

and the hostess had to stifle a smile,
sadly acknowledging that
they were all out of puppies that night.
