from the realm of books

As a reader, she knows more words
from context on a page
than from actually having heard them.

So she dropped a word
into a conversation the other day
that took me a minute
to process.

Later,
on another day,
walking to school,
I asked her, “How do you pronounce r-e-a-l-m?”
“Reel-m,” she said without hesitation.
I nodded. Then said,
“You pronounce it ‘realm’.”
“Oh, cool.”
There was another pause.
“So?” she queried.
“Just so you’d know”
“Okay.”

I’ve said it before;
I say it again.
I love her confidence.
I love her adaptability.
I pray they both continue to stand her in good stead.
