either/or?

Our God,

The news hits our front lawn every morning,
and when I sit down to read it through,
I’m either horrified, saddened, angry
(and further variations and degrees of negative)—
thinking “No! No! No!”
or pleased, happy, amused
(and further variations and degrees of positive)—
thinking, “Yes! Yes! Yes!”

So, too, when it comes to prayer—
considering the various circumstances
of which I know (mine and those of others),
I respond with variations and degrees of
either “No! No! No!” or “Yes! Yes! Yes!”

Remind us, God, that You consider circumstance
and think either “Yes! Yes! Yes!”
or “May be …. May be …. May yet be ….”

Thank You for Your commitment to “Yes!”
May we learn never to be so overcome with “No”
that we no longer see hope and possibility.

Amen.
