when we all dream God’s dream

The meter is 12.9.12.9.9.9.9.9 which works with [OLD RUGGED CROSS],
the tune to which the hymn “The Old Rugged Cross” is sung.

From creation’s first day to the end of all time,
God reveals self in story and song.
First transcendence confessed, then, transcendence enfleshed,
then the Spirit to which we belong.
We believe in the three that are one—
God come closer to us through the years,
and that story so long now begun,
it demands more of us as it nears.

God made all that there is, all that’s been and will be
to express God’s communion of joy.
And that joy does mandate that God will relate—
will divine love in our lives employ.
We believe in the three that are one—
God come closer to us through the years,
and that story so long now begun,
it demands more of us as it nears.

The deep love of our God, that was tried and found true,
when the cross we saw raised up on high,
it’s a love that exceeds any words any deeds—
yet the love for which we must all strive.
We believe in the three that are one—
God come closer to us through the years,
and that story so long now begun,
it demands more of us as it nears.

When we all dream God’s dream—when the vision is clear—
when the breath of God fills us with grace—
when the Spirit extends the love that transcends,
we’ll be gathered in God’s warm embrace.
We believe in the three that are one—
God come closer to us through the years,
and that story so long now begun,
it demands more of us as it nears.
