such a light

So in one of the ancient stories,
Icarus flew too close to the sun—
didn’t maintain his distance—
and died.
Can’t get too close to the power of such a light.

And Apollo (among others in the ancient stories)
was tasked with “driving” the sun through the sky
maintaing that necessary distance from the earth
so we wouldn’t die—like Icarus
too close to the power of such a light.

But in our stories, Jesus (the power of light incarnate)
came too close to us—didn’t maintain his distance,
and yet it was he who died—
was killed,
and we can live
so close to the power of such a light.
