gladly corrected

Sea kayaking was on the list
of potential vacation activities up in Maine,
and it was received with interest by our oldest.
But, as it turned out, our youngest was too young.

I floated the idea of splitting up.
I could take the older child and go kayaking;
my wife could go bicycling with the younger.

I was ambivalent about that,
but prompted by the interest already expressed
when kayaking was first mentioned.

Then I was gladly and quickly chastened—
by the very one who had shown interest,
emphatically,
“No! I don’t want to!
We do things together—
all of us—
on vacation!”

It is sometimes a wondrous thing indeed
to stand,
gladly,
corrected.
