baptist status, vi.

Historically, Baptists have been at their best,
have claimed their most powerful voice
when speaking not as authority but when speaking to authority,
and not so much speaking to the acknowledged authority
that is the voice of culture,
as to the voice of culture institutionalized in law,
and then, speaking not on behalf of an issue
more important than people (especially minorities),
but on behalf of a principle arising out of a concern for people
(especially minorities).

That’s who we’ve been … at our best.
