tap the well of tears

This hymn comes from our service of griefs and hope, part of our advent celebration. We recognize that the season of celebration, of light and joy is such a difficult time for so many. There’s a good existential reason the celebration of light comes during the darkest time of the year. The meter is 6.5.6.5.D. which works with WYE VALLEY, the tune to which the hymn “Like a River Glorious” is sung.

All the tears of living gather in one well.
Every year it deepens, by each grief compelled.
So each person’s lifetime floods the world anew,
and we drown in sorrows, under rainbow hues.
Put away illusion, tap the well of tears.
Onward lies salvation, through our doubts and fears.

Awkward in the presence of the well’s deep truth.
Trained to hide our feelings−lessons learned in youth.
Celebrate the fullness−all that we can feel.
Let the range of feeling help us know what’s real.
Put away illusion, tap the well of tears.
Onward lies redemption, through our doubts and fears.

Made in God’s own image, shaped to live with soul.
Tears are part of living−living that is whole.
God blessed us completely, why would we deny
parts of God’s own image mirrored when we cry?
Put away illusion, tap the well of tears.
Onward lies our wholeness, through our doubts and fears.

God’s tears fall upon us−happens every day
in a world that’s sin-filled−world that’s lost its way.
We are washed in sorrow and baptized in pain
that we might be raised up−promised life as again.
Put away illusion, tap the well of tears.
Onward lies salvation, through our doubts and fears.
