I didn’t have to preach this past Sunday, so last week I had some time to look ahead to next week’s Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:1-14. One scholar suggested that verses 9 and 10 were taken from an ancient hymn. So here are some lyrics (18.104.22.168), based on 2 Timothy 1:1-14 that can be sung to a proud, assertive tune like ST. DENIO, the tune to which we sing the hymn “Immortal, Invisible.”
Oh be not ashamed of the faith you proclaim.
And live your life boldly in Christ Jesus’ name.
Love wildly, give freely without any fear,
and name your God proudly for all ears to hear.
God saved us and called us and set us apart.
It’s not that we’re worthy, but kept in God’s heart—
according to God’s own deep purpose and grace—
the true grace eternally seen in Christ’s face.
That grace it is present whenever God’s borne—
especially and always when greeted with scorn—
abolishing death in explosions of life—
denying the darkness in living out light.
Rekindle the fire of the gifts so divine—
entrusting to God all that makes your lives shine.
Hold fast to the health of the word still made flesh,
as Spirit and living and God’s word enmesh.
We are not ashamed of the faith we proclaim.
We will live life boldly in Christ Jesus’ name—
love wildly, give freely, without any fear,
and name our God proudly for all ears to hear.
