child within

This hymn was written for a friend with whom I traveled while she was pregnant. I just recently found out some other friends are expecting, and I was reminded of these lyrics. The meter is 87.87 with refrain, which works with [MY LIFE FLOWS ON] the tune to which we sing the hymn, “How Can I Keep from Singing?”

This growing child inside your womb
for whom we pray this morning,
may God bless her with ears to hear
the joy creation’s singing.
Welcomed and loved before he’s born
in the great congregation,
now little one, you hear our song,
join in this great elation.

May God bless you that you might know
the wonder of God’s glory,
that was itself born just like you;
we still proclaim the story.
So may you grow in all its joy,
and know its beauty clearly,
and choose the way our Lord did live
and hold it ever nearly.

We pray you hope; we pray you love,
a faith that will sustain you.
Facing the world in days to come,
we pray God’s peace will find you—
as goal and gift along your way,
as strength and consolation,
as song to sing, and singer too,
singing a new creation.

This growing child inside your womb
for whom we pray this morning,
may she grow strong; may he grow wise
and revel in our singing.
And may she trust your love for him,
a love that shows God’s own love,
a love that grows the more it’s shared
until all earth is heaven.
